The world of drafting changed forever in the 90’s when CAD software became more exposed to the general population. Before CAD became the drafting industries standard practice Drafters would draw every line by hand with the use of a drafting board, and several hand held tools. This method was much more time consuming, and for isometric drawings(3D) it could take days or weeks to complete complicated renderings. Over the last ten years, several software companies have made advancements to CAD software making the task of drafting more user friendly on the computer.

CAD Drafting

If your not familiar with CAD or CADD it’s the acronym for Computer Aided Drafting. Sometimes its referred to as Computer Aided Drafting Design also. 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional drawings are created when the draftsmen enters information into a CAD software program. Lines are drawn on the X, Y, and Z axis to create 3 dimensional models. When designing 2D drawings only the X, and Y axis are used which represent the left, right, up, and down directions. I can remember as a child my Father teaching me to draw lines, and to write my A, B, C’s on a drafting board he made for my room. When I first started using CAD software all the lines had to be put in manually with commands on the keyboard. They would tell the software to create the lines starting point, length, and what angle to direction it. This process seemed to take forever compared to the way lines are created nowadays. With the CAD software available today you can perform all kinds of commands in a 3D environment. For instance, if you wanted to add a radius to a corner that has already been created, all you have to do is click the command for a fillet. It will then ask you for a dimension on the radius, and after you enter the dimension it will create a perfectly smooth and rounded corner.

Offset is one of the commands that comes in useful almost every time. This will allow you to spread out a single line or multiple lines to whatever measurement you input. Copy when used correctly can save large amounts of time. This allows the CAD Drafter to basically copy any objects drawn and place them wherever. Mirroring is one of my favorite commands. Most designs have lines and other objects equidistant from a point in the center of the design. If you split the design in half, draw it, and perform the mirror command with the point of mirror in the center point we discussed, you can getaway with only drafting half of the design.

3D Modeling

Those commands will help you achieve your design faster for 2D designs, but when 3D modeling there’s a couple more you need to know about. The first and most well know 3D command is extrude. This is the process of transforming a polyline(combination of lines that connect) into a three dimensional object. One thing most people don’t realize is that it can be used to cut out areas as well. Once you’ve mastered this command the next on the list would be revolve. Revolve allows a polyline to revolve around a center axis. For curved 3D surfaces extrude doesn’t work, but revolve will. One of my favorite commands for 3D CAD is the circular pattern command. It also works for 2D drawing, but it can really come in handy when designing 3D models. With this command you can take any feature on your design, copy it to other areas on an axis you choose, revolve them 360 degrees, and decide how many times you want it placed. All of the copied features are equally spaced allowing for precise designs. It saves tons of time from having to measure certain angles, and dimensions.

If you use the commands within the software correctly, and at the right stage within the design you can be extremely efficient. The most important thing to know when CAD drafting is where to start your design. Before you start designing think about the commands at your disposal, and how you can get the most design out of the least steps. Most CAD designers just start drawing, and before they know it, they can’t design certain aspects of the drawing without having to take extra steps that weren’t necessary. When starting a 3D model the most important trick is to start designing at the right point. In most CAD programs today there is a space within the 3D realm called the origin. The origin is the point where the drawing planes within model space intersect. The three planes are known as the XY, XZ, and YZ planes. Right in the center where they all meet is the origin of the 3D environment, and where any professional designer should start first. The advantage of doing this is it allows you to draw a sketch in any direction you please, thus making the process of using the commands much easier. Not only are planes used to sketch on, but they can be used in conjunction with the commands to perform the necessary task to create 3D models.

Before any CAD designer starts working on a 3D drawing they need to ask themselves what is the most efficient way of designing this model. What makes a good CAD drafter is the way he, or she goes about designing the project. The least amount of commands executed the better. Always try to think how you can use commands like mirror, and copy to lessen the amount of work in the design. For instance, if a drawing is exactly the same from some center point, you only have to draw half of it, then use mirror to create the other half. Ideally the CAD draftsmen would design the half from the origin extending out, so the mirrors edge would lie on a plane. This would allow the command to be performed correctly, as well as centering the design on the origin, which is exactly where you want it to be.

While your in the environment for creating 3D features the origin allows you to have a rotation axis for commands like revolve, and circular pattern. If your extruding an object that lies on the XY plane for instance, there’s an option within extrude that allows the object to extrude in both directions, placing your 3D object directly in the center of the origin. If you take advantage of all the commands embedded in CAD programs you can save minutes, hours, and even days worth of work.
The secret to becoming a great 3D CAD designer is to utilize all the tools available, and to design your features with the least amount of steps. Just make sure you spend a few minutes before every design studying the characteristics and dimensions that make up the 3D model. I’ve been in the CAD drafting, and 3D modeling field for almost two decades now. Throughout my learning I’ve come to find out that the most direct route to creating a design is the correct one. This basically means to try and create all of your main solid objects first. Once this is completed you want to start on the detail work. If you have several cut features for example, you can use tools within the CAD software that will allow you to duplicate the feature. Draw the feature once, and then use a command to either revolve the feature, copy the feature, or copy the feature and revolve it around a center axis. One tip a lot of designers don’t know is that you can mirror a 3D object.

Mechanical CAD

This allows the CAD Designer to only draw half of the project before mirroring it on the center axis of your  3D drawing.
Once a CAD Designer fully understands and can operate the commands within the software he’s half way there to becoming a professional. The next and most important skill to learn for a CAD Draftsmen is to review the design before beginning it. This period allows the designer to go about the most efficient way of producing the design. For example is a CAD Designer was designing a rim first he would get the dimensions for the side view, draw half of it, and revolve the rest around the center point of axis. Once this was completed, he would then begin to work on the internal components of the rim which would include cut outs, and various features for spokes, etc. Once the first cut-out was designed the CAD Designer could then use a command to make the same cut out, a given number of times around a single axis point of his or her choosing. Engineering has been an aspect of life since the beginnings of human existence. Civil engineering might be considered to have been created between 4000 and 2000 BC in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia when humans started to abandon a nomadic existence, thus causing a need for the construction of shelter. During this time transportation became increasingly important leading to the development of the wheel and sailing. The construction on Pyramids in Egypt ( circa 2700-2500 BC) might be considered the first instances of large structure constructions. Other ancient historic civil engineering constructions include the Parthenon by Iktinos in Ancient Greece (447-438 BC) the Appian Way by Roman engineers (c. 312 BC) the Great Wall of China by General Meng Tien under orders from Chin Emperor Shih Huang Ti (c. 220 BC) and the Stupas constructed in ancient Sri Lanka like the and the extensive irrigation works in Anuradhapura.

The Romans developed civil structures throughout their empire including especially aqueducts, insulate, harbors, bridges, dams and roads. In the 18th century the term civil engineering began to be used to distinguish it from military engineering.

The first self proclaimed civil engineer was John Smeaton who constructed the Eddystone Lighthouse. In 1771 Smeaton and some of his colleagues formed the Smeatonian Society of Civil Engineers, a group of leaders of the profession who met informally over dinner. In 1818 the Institution of Civil Engineers was founded in London and in 1820 the eminent engineer Thomas Telford became its first president. The institution received a Royal Charter in 1828 formally recognizing civil engineering as a profession. Its charter defined civil engineering as the art of directing the great sources of power in nature for the use and convenience of man, as the means of production and traffic in states, both for external and internal trade, as applied in the construction of roads, bridges, aqueducts, canals, river navigation and docks for internal intercourse and exchange, and in the construction of ports harbors, moles, breakwaters and lighthouses, and in the art of navigation by artificial power for the purposes of commerce, and in the construction and application of machinery, and in the drainage of cities and towns.

The first private college to teach Civil Engineering in the United States was Norwich University founded in 1819 by Captain Alden Partridge. The first degree in Civil Engineering in the United States was awarded by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1835. The first such degree to be awarded to a woman was granted by Cornell University to Nora Stanton Blatch in 1905.

There are Two main Drafting Methods practiced in the World Today. The First which is more prominent is developed with computer Software called CAD or Computer Aided Design.

An attractive house that includes a number of special features is a modern presentation for the traditional Garrison. A distinguishing feature is the overhanging second story. Compared to the ranch and one and one half story houses, the two story house is more economical to build. This may be built with or without a basement. It requires a smaller lot and has a small roof and foundation area compared to interior space of most other designs. Heating and cooling the two story house is simple and comparatively economical. Heat from the first floor naturally rises to the second floor level. Even though the second floor is usually far from the furnace it is usually easy to heat. Cooling is facilitated due to the fact that the ceiling is not directly under the roof. Ventilation is easy and effective when ample windows are included in the design.
The two story, however, in many localities is not as popular today as in former years. This is probably a result of the turn to more contemporary styles. The two story home is usually traditional in style. The two story home, unless located among other similar styles may appear to be out of place.
General exterior maintenance is usually more difficult and costly because of the height. For some people the necessity of climbing stairs from level to level is considered a disadvantage. The two story does not lend itself to variations in style as well as some other designs, but architects have added a contemporary flair, and as a result, have improved their overall appearance and sale ability.
As the cost and availability of land becomes more of a problem, the two story house may gain in popularity. Now that everybody is going “Green” the change for more room in less space is going to become more popular, and I believe that two story houses will be more appealing to people investing in residential homes. As time goes by materials that are recyclable and are less damaging to the environment will become more readily available and more used than the traditional building materials of the past

CAD Software Designed this Architectural 3D Model before it was Built

There are basically three variations of the split level design: the side by side, the front to back, and the back to front. Lots sloping from the left or right are suited for the side by side design. This design places the living area opposite the sleeping and intermediate areas. Variation number two, the front to back split level, is suited for lots which are high in front and low in the back. This house looks like a ranch from the front and a two story from the back. The living area faces the street and the bedrooms are on the second level to the rear.
The third variation, the back to front split level, requires a lot that is low in front and high in back. The intermediate level faces the street at grade. The bedrooms are above, also facing the street. The living level is a the rear. This model looks like a two story in front and a ranch in the rear.
Traffic Circulation
A primary consideration in designing a functional plan is traffic circulation. Traffic circulation involves those areas of the house which provide a means of moving from one area or room to another. Circulation must be planned for maximum efficiency. In a will planned arrangement the distance from the garage to the kitchen in short and direct. The foyer is centrally located and convenient to all parts of the house. All bedrooms are close to a bath. Few rooms have traffic planned through them. The family room and eating nook are exceptions. An analysis should be made of traffic circulation to determine if the plan is as functional as it could be. Frequently, a slight change in the  Architectural floor plan can increase smooth flow of traffic to desirable locations.

One advantage to CAD is the ability to perform 3D commands and give a 2D image 3D characteristics. This is usually done by adding an orthographic view to the blueprints which allows the person interpreting the design to better understand what he or she is looking at. If you were designing your technical drawing on a set of blueprints it would take several hours or days to completely freehand the design, and it still wouldn’t be as precise, or have the detail within it compared to a 3D Model that was designed with CAD software. The fact of saving time is only one of the many advantages CAD programs has over the traditional way of designing with blueprints.
CAD is not only for one or two specialties of drafting, but instead CAD has a separate program for each one of the design fields including: Architecture, Mechanical, Structural, Machine, Civil, Electrical or Electronic, and software specifically for designing Inventions for Inventors. This modern design borrows many of the fine details of the Southern Colonial to express a mood of elegance and traditional charm. The outstanding architectural features are the front colonnade and the giant portico. The extended portico sheltered the front entrance from the weather and kept direct sunlight from glaring into the first and second story rooms. These homes were usually massive, with upper and lower balconies, three story chimney for bedroom fireplaces, ornate woodwork and iron trim, and a roof over the driveway to protect persons using the side entrance. Many of these features of the Southern Colonial may be adapted to the aesthetic qualities of modern homes.

It is evident that the influences of the past, both in beauty and function, have had a profound effect on modern home designs. On the other hand, many new materials, appliances and modes of living have caused the architect to “think out” ways to plan homes for all styles of modern living. The modern American home is a combination of many of these factors.
