Drafting

Drafting or technical drawing is the process of creating Technical Drawings by an Engineer, Architect, Interior Designer or Drafter.

Some of the standards they use include line thickness, dimensioning, text size, projections, descriptive geometry, and annotations.

In different times they may be referred to as a drafting technician, draftsmen, or drafting person. This person creates technical drawings which are a form of graphic communication. A technical drawing differs from a common drawing by how its interpreted. A common drawing can hold different meanings and purposes, while a technical drawing is intended to concisely and clearly communicate all needed specifications to transform an idea into physical form with the use of dimensioning and other drafting standards.

These are used to ensure the drawings are only interpreted one way.

Drafters today mostly use CAD to produce their designs. There are other methods drafters use as well to create designs. Please visit the Drafting Methods page to learn more about the processes used by draftsmen.  If you have any questions about drafting please feel free to visit our blog dedicated to CAD and teaching CAD drafting techniques.  Thank You
